Chevrolet Volt Production To Start November 11
Sep 03, 2010 - 4:02 PM - by AutoGuide.com

November 11th is the official date for Job 1 of Chevrolet Volt production. The exact date was confirmed by a General Motors spokesman to Autoblog Green, and the date should remain the same as long as no issues with government certification and all pre-production testing is complete.

Cars generally start getting to dealers roughly one month after production begins, meaning cars should hit dealerships in December. However, some are suggesting that GM may hold an event to commemorate deliveries of the first cars at the same time as the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 17-18.

General Motors Attempting To Trademark The Phrase "Range Anxiety"
Sep 03, 2010 - 4:01 PM - by AutoGuide.com

General Motors is attempting to trademark the phrase "range anxiety", a term that apparently describes how electric car owners feel when the battery charge drops to near empty levels.

GM Spokesman Rob Peterson confirmed the move to the New York Times, but gave no timeline on when the process would be complete. "We've been told the process will take nine months or so," Mr. Peterson said, "but I'm not an attorney so I can't say for sure."

While the Chevrolet Volt uses a gasoline motor as both a generator and a means of powering the car after the electric power source is exhausted, the trademarking of the phrase could be an attempted swipe at other electric cars like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Roadster, which operate solely on electric power and do not have a "range extender".

While the Leaf has a variety of systems to alert the driver to the vehicle's battery life and potential charging spots, Tesla, which uses only two simple readouts displaying battery life and the distance the vehicle can travel before a charge is needed, was dismissive of the campaign. "By all means, G.M. can have 'range anxiety,' said Tesla spokesman Ricardo Reyes, to the Times. "To Roadster owners, the term is as irrelevant as 'gas stop' or 'smog check.' "

Chevrolet Volt Gets Torn Apart By Hydraulic Jaws
Sep 02, 2010 - 2:58 PM - by AutoGuide.com

Bet the headline got your attention, didn't it? Unfortunately for you electric car haters, this doesn't have to do with wanton destruction of an electric car.

Electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt pose a significant danger to Paramedics, Fire Fighters and other emergency responders due to the significantly higher voltage (no pun intended) and hazardous materials used in the vehicle batteries. Chevrolet has taken the bold step of allowing first responders to tear up Volt prototypes with tools like the Jaws of Life to conduct mock rescues and learn how to avoid parts of the car that may pose an additional hazard to the rescue teams.

You can still watch the Volt get ripped up with rescue tools in the video at the link below, but it's really more educational than entertaining. Given that electric cars will be a bigger part of our world in the future, being able to train first responders properly will become an important issue as gasoline vehicles fade from the landscape.

General Motors Files for IPO; Says Buh-Bye to Socialism
Aug 19, 2010 - 3:26 PM - by AutoGuide.com

General Motors has just announced the filing of papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) that will see the company handed back over to investors and removed from government control.

Including in the filing are plans for preferred stock that carries with it both debt and equity and also has priority in a bankruptcy situation.

According to a Bloomberg report, GM hopes to generate $16 billion by the IPO, selling off roughly a fifth of the stock currently owned by the U.S. Treasury. This would then make the government a minority shareholder in General Motors and is likely to be followed by continued sell-offs until GM is entirely out of government hands. Currently the U.S. government owns a 61 percent stake in GM.

GM has already paid back the $6.7 billion in loans it received from the U.S. and Canadian governments, however, that amount is only a small portion of the almost $50 billion bailout GM received.

Chevrolet Volt Needs Premium Gasoline To Function
Jul 29, 2010 - 4:21 PM - by AutoGuide.com

The Truth About Cars appears to have dug up an interesting but troubling fact about the new Chevrolet Volt; it requires premium gasoline.

Despite being able to go 40 miles without consuming a drop of gasoline, Chevrolet's environmental savior plug-in hybrid needs the top shelf dino juice for some inexplicable reason, despite the fact that its gas engine range extender is a wimpy 1.4L four-cylinder engine putting out 80 horsepower. The Volt's $41,000 pricetag and requirement for premium fuel are shaping up to be a couple of big strikes against a very promising product.
