After much speculation, General Motors has now confirmed its first project with Google. An updated Chevrolet Volt Mobile App will include a Navigation tab that allows Google Maps to work with OnStar. Using their Google Android smart phone, Volt customers will be able to see the location of their Volt on Google Maps, as well as their location in reference to their car. This setup will work with Google's voice search function to allow Volt owners to search for a location in reference to the Volt. OnStar can then take over, giving turn-by-turn directions to the destination, once the driver gets in the car. And possibly the best feature; this partnership will also be able to give Volt owners voice directions to the location of their vehicle through their smart phone.

More info about this new Navigation Tab, as well as future plans for the Chevrolet Volt Mobile App will be given at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, which runs from May 19-20.

The Navigation Tab won't be available at the launch of the Volt Mobile App (set for this Fall), but will be available on version 2.0. The current version offers functions like showing the Volt's charge level and range; if it is plugged in; the ability to charge the vehicle or schedule a charging; send text or email reminders to charge the battery; provide info on past fuel economy performance and, of course, remotely start the car.
