voltage as close to 18 volts as possible, many performance competitors are running high output alternators putting out around 18 volts. 18 volts into a 12-volt battery literally “cooks” the plates, as the maximum charge voltage into a 12-volt battery should never exceed 15.5 or 2.6 volts per cell. Subjecting a 12-volt battery to these kinds of high voltages drastically shortens the life of the battery as the active material on the plates starts to soften and shed due to the high voltage. The 16-volt battery, on the other hand, has a maximum charge voltage of 20.8 volts, which is well within the charging range of these high voltage competition alternators.
