Remote entry stalls during cold morning

The volt 2013 I purchased last summer which was driving great but when winter approached and temperature drops (specially in the cold morning around 40-50 F in bay area) i noticed that the remote unlock feature fails to work and in response I have to take out the key, press the unlock button repeatedly for several seconds then door finally unlocks. Not a huge issue but it is a nuisance enough specially when i am in a hurry. Several times, I had to resort to using key to enter which sets off the alarm which drove me nuts. Today i took the car to dealership but they want me set appt which will do a diagnosis which will cost whopping 160$. I don't want this payment specially for potentially minor issue. Is this a common problem for volt 13? I suspected initially it could be the battery for remore and tried the other remote that also came with it, but seconds one still has same problem. It feels like something not right with the car itself. That is also obvious because it happens in the cold and it is the car itself that has been sitting the cold not the remote. Any hint would be appreciated. Thanks

I haven't had any issues with my 2013 so far and I'm in one of the coldest parts of the bay area.

I'd still try a new battery. If both remotes still have the original battery in them, they could be low after 4 years.
